YORK, Pa. —

Outdoor dining at restaurants in downtown York is changing.

North George Street, near Continental Square, will no longer be shut down on Friday and Saturday, but some new options are opening up for diners.

The city said there will be more room on the sidewalk for dining tables. A new enclosed area will be created to include the right turn lane.

At least one restaurant is speaking out about the new plan. Robert Godfrey said his patrons at the Handsome Cab don’t like sharing the street with cars.

This is what he has heard from his customers: “Huge disappointment. Bad decision. Bad for the city. Bad for business,” he said.

Mayor Michael Helfrich explained his reasons for the new plan. He said he was concerned about ambulances having to detour around North George Street when the street was closed on Fridays and Saturdays.

The general manager of the Rockfish Public House likes the changes.

“I think adding seven-day-a-week outdoor dining to our space is great for us. It means more available tables, more seating on the street. It’s beautiful out today. I would love to sit outside and enjoy a meal outside,” said Robert Faucette.

The outdoor dining began when COVID-19 restricted the number of diners in restaurants.
