Of course this is not authentic Sichuan cuisine but it's nice to know they're making these from scratch

Any other recommendations for legit Chinese food there? I’m compiling a list for my visit.

Lao Sze Chuan is the best Americanized Chinese I’ve had in Chicago that’s similar to what I had in Michigan / east coast. However they’re so expensive.

I used to eat at the Chicago location all the time when I lived near by. I was wondering how this location was and if it gets many customers. It is down the street from the hospital I will be in and thought it would be a good idea to have somebody in my family bring me some take out. I love spicy and mala. However I’ll be having a baby and will prefer something mild and full of veggies. Any recommendations?

You can always ask if they make something in house as well. Most places I’ve seen are fairly upfront about it

That’s pretty normal. There aren’t a lot of frozen crab rangoon product that can be bought that are the type being sold in restaurants. We used to do this at a small rinky dink take out spot.

Lousy Swan! I love that place! It’s a chill place to get better than decent Chinese food. I just wish it wasn’t an hour away from my new place.

Slight tangent for OP: Chef’s Special Cocktail Bar, the sister restaurant of Giant, also makes their rangoons by hand, and those are the most amazing rangoons I’ve ever had. And I’m a Chinese person and I love going to Chef’s Special Cocktail Bar, because they kick ass and somehow they taste better than 95% of the establishments in Chinatown, for the quality of ingredients they use and the efforts that goes into the cooking.

I love going to this restaurant. When I’m making dinner at home, I used to buy the plain white rice to save some time but they removed the option just recently 😔. I wish they would bring it back.

They were doing the same at the one in Chinatown tonight!

  10. You know the place is legit if they are doing prep work in the dining room.

They can get in big trouble preparing for outside the kitchen. Not cool. Those surfaces aren’t cleanable

I miss the highland park location so fucking bad.

They’re so expensive but I would have those pork dumplings as a last meal.

They changed it so the discount is now between 3-5 but it’s still a pretty good deal

I love LSC but I find their quality inconsistent (at least the Uptown location’s)

You have to ask for meat. Their mapo tofu with ground pork was on Thrillist’s 50 foods to eat in Chicago before you die. Mapo is made with Szechuan peppercorns – something that most people are slightly allergic to and it causes a slight numb in your mouth while eating it. A fantastic eating experience that I enjoy about once a month.
