Well, this is a bummer. Dissatisfaction with quality control, corporate attempts to influence his content, and shareholder value over customer satisfaction. Among other stuff.

This is a damn shame…
I see this guy get dragged a lot for one reason or another (welcome to the internet) but he’s wholesome and frankly knows his shit.
I’m actually glad to see him have principles and stick to his word then worry about green vs red, as he said.
The fact is that if you’re watching to learn vs it being about KJ/BGE the content is good. I’ve learned some great things no matter the cooker.
Probably just so he can make the same videos all over again just in big green eggs. Content is king, I don’t dislike him just get annoyed at his rocking back and forth, long windedness and his ridiculously cringy thumbnails
Typically people say that the accessories for the KJ are the advantage, but iKammand, Slo-roller, Connected Joe are all over hype and more issues than solutions. If BGE is making improvements due to the competition, that is a good thing for everyone.
I followed him for a while, learned a lot, and then tired of his constant pimping of product. Moving back to BGE just allows him to start over again with a whole new viewer base. Like when your favorite NASCAR driver changes sponsors/cars. You maintain at least a portion of your old following, and pick up more along the way.
He’s just doing this to refresh his content which has stagnated.
NGL, I am hoping to buy a Kamado this year, and Smoking Dad was an important source for why I was planning to get a KJ. I will now give BGE another look.
I know it’s not popular, but brand loyalty on a kamado is pretty silly. They all do the same thing and the food won’t know the difference if cooked in kamado A or kamado B. One of the main draws of kamado cooking at it’s roots, it is a very rudimentary cooking method. Essentially, set a fire in a ceramic enclosure for good heat retention and install vent/dampers to control air-flow and thus temperatures. With all of the accessories on the market, from both OEM and 3rd party, any kamado can be outfitted to the users liking.
I’ve owned 4 different brands over the last 10 years and never felt any of them provided any SIGNIFICANT advantage over the others. Currently, I have 2 kamados sitting on the patio and regardless of the brand I can gain knowledge, technique and expertise from any brand designated group like this or any brand loyal youtube channel. I guess my point is that I don’t really care whether he’s team green red, purple, pink, etc. SHRUG
Eleven years ago I picked KJ over BGE simply because for the same price I got an adjustable rack system and ash tool. All other stuff was basically the same.
Not terribly surprising that that disparity was addressed, however long it took.
As a noob I watched a bunch of John Setzler YouTube videos, figured out my lump choice with a little Naked Whiz guidance, and settled in for a decade of great cooks for me, family and friends.
Never once have I felt the need to second guess my choice. I went through one warranty firebox replacement but otherwise it’s been ten years of ‘ain’t broke don’t fix it’ cooking. And I expect a few more decades just like that, god willing.
Maybe I’m an old fuddy duddy but for the life of me I don’t comprehend the need to add blowers, electronics, whatever whizbang gizmos to a proven, simple fire design. It’s completely a cash grab gimmick, and fuel for content creators like smoking dad.
I don’t begrudge the dude his choice to make a channel, that’s great and I’m happy if he has attracted more people to kamado cooking. But the current state of this sub and other social media outlets like Smoking Dad is constantly just some fugazi of obscure hypercomparisons and unnecessary features that do nothing but confuse those new to the product.
I think he’s got some good points, but don’t regret my decision on my KJ BJ3. 3 years in and I’m still learning how to get better at bbq.
My hope is Kamado gets a kick in the rear and realizes when you get complacent, you begin to fall. You must continue to innovate and take care of your community.
I don’t get the switch. Most of the stuff he mentioned only applies it you’re in the market for a new grill. Is he replacing all of his grills either BGE? Seems wasteful.
Learned a bit about temp control from him early on in my kamado career but it has been quite some time since he has produced any worthwhile content, so can’t really say that I’m disappointed. Once he gained some traction his channel turned entirely into pushing and featuring sponsored products that I don’t care for at all.
lol. And many of you have been simping for his bad advice for years. He switched for one reason alone, he got paid.
I stop watching him because of how double indirect bulshit
Well that really sucks!!
Honestly, I was kind of thinking the same thing! I love my KJ but The customer service is horrible when issues arise. Having a local BGE dealer for support is definitely a positive.
There’s only a finite amount of useful information to share so the well runs dry eventually.
His contract for Kamado Joe probably expired and BGE probably gave him money and a new grill to switch
