There is an exploding cake in the opening title sequence for Carême (streaming weekly on Apple TV+). This, you’ll be glad to hear, sets the tone for a series that cares more for glossy, outlandish melodrama than tidy historical accuracy.
The real-life Marie-Antoine ‘Antonin’ Carême, “the world’s first celebrity chef”, probably didn’t look like Paolo Nutini, and he perhaps spent more time filling delicious pastry puffs than hiding behind corners pretending to be a spy.
