Visited a Standing Sushi Bar chain restaurant when I was in Japan recently – Uogashi Nihonichi.

Like the name suggests, you stand behind a bar counter to eat. Upon entering, the chef places two leaves for them to lay the sushi on later. There’s free flow green tea as well.

I went to three different outlets – Shinjuku, Namba, and Akihabara. First two had me ordering off a menu to the chef while the last had me ordering on a tablet.

The sushi I had was decent enough and as someone with a modest appetite, none of my meals exceeded 20 dollars. Fairly happy with my experience.

Sushi I had were generally tuna and salmon ones, and I tried aburi unagi once as well.

Our hotel was by the location in Shinjuku, I went three times! Insane price, we paid about $30 for the full set with uni and scallop oh my. Gotta be my first meal when I’m back

If this was the norm in America the sushi scene would be amazing.

I have been here and I dream of it every night.

  8. Big fan of this place always nice to stop by when I visit. The crazy part is, sometimes when I see some US “omakase” photos posted here all I can think is, “man this looks worse than that standing sushi place”
