Have always cooked on a Weber Kettle for years. Decided to add the 30” Slate for more everyday cooking.
Had the family all round for the first cook of smash burgers.
Pretty much followed a vid on YT, from wowbbq.co.uk
Made sure everything was prepped and ready to go. Got the grill heated and made a start.
Wow, it cooks fast. Very fast! Went from organised to frantic pretty quick. The press got really hot and could barely hold it. Bacon got a bit too well done.
The quickly found I was running out of space for everything around. Didn’t know where to put the tools when not using and all felt a bit stressful! 😂
However, all burgers came out great and tasted amazing and everyone polished everything off entirely.
All in all, a successful first cook. But lots to get to grips with!
Pick of the setup, post cook!

I need to build my grill one of those 👍
Nice deck
Cafeteria trays are a god send for getting things on and off and staying organized. For tools they sell holders that you can hang them, or stand them up over the griddle top. I have a silicone mat for the side table I set my tools on.
For the actual cooking put the bacon on a cold griddle and keep the heat around medium. When it’s almost done crank the other side up and start the burgers. Good prep makes it all go easier.
Nice setup! Throw a cooking mat under the griddle to protect that nice deck
Love the setup. Only thing missing is comfy chair and a cold one😉
Thanks. Yes, a cooking mat is now on the list! Realised that would be required within about 5/10 mins of cooking.
I’m thinking a silicone mat to rest tools on would be good. Never been keen on hanging tools.
For the bacon, I cooked that first and moved to the side, but that side was still on full heat also. Thinking a warming rack of some kind would be good.
As for the shelter and deck. Paid the deck and made the shelter this week. Been a full on week to get everything ready for bbq Sunday! 😂
Yes, definitely some fine tuning to be done. I scraped it down and cleaned with a little water. Then applied a very light coat of vegetable oil. Griddle looks like this now.

I’m guessing that’s ok? I know it’s “pre-seasoned” but I’m guessing it’ll season down with use?
What’s covering your gas canister?
Highly recommend some bbq gloves, they are like normal gloves but heat proof so you can still use all your other tools etc. very handy for the weighted smasher.
I don’t use weighted smasher for smashing anymore, just use it to hold down things bacon, grilled cheeses etc. instead get a nice big spatula, and use the handle of a wooden spoon rto press down on the top while smashing with the bottom.
Bc I don’t think anyone else has commented this (I’m a woman so perhaps that’s why I migh tbe the only one: I love your potted hosta.
