Taco place by me recently started offering this (and usual green and orange sauces) and I swear to god it's kicking my ass. Im not used to having this much heat in a Mexican dish.

Not as hot as habanero’s, but much hotter than Serrano’s! You can find them at any Mexican store, or even at the grocery store at times, in the dried chili section. I love chili de Arbols! I usually add about 5 in homemade sauces.

Arbols definitely give a hell of a kick. Made the mistake of putting way too many into a salsa batch once.
But the flavor is awesome, so its worth it.

I usually chuck about 10 of them into my chili blend for birria tacos, along with habaneros and a bunch of other chiles (guajillo, chipotle, ancho, sometimes also cascabel, pasilla and/or morita). Now I’ll have to make salsa solely with chile de arbol someday soon so that I can figure out how much heat they add to my dishes 😁

Chile arbol are used in al pastor and a bunch of other dishes, mostly to bring some delicious heat so yeah, they’re hot as heck when prepared correctly. SO good though.

“Chile de arbol” just means that pepper is one of the ingredients in the salsa. If this one is hotter than what you’re used to, that means it’s not as diluted as others you’ve tried.
I’d imagine they are responding to more demand from customers in your area to have “real spicy”. For a long time, restaurants have feared the sorts of “customer” who says they want spicy, then refuses to pay because it’s “too spicy”. There seems to be a growing backlash to that with careful increases in spice heat levels at some restaurants. I doubt we’ll see reaper salsa with this kind of concentration in my lifetime, but I have some hope for future generations of spicy enthusiasts, heh.

If that’s the majority of the salsa… Yes. Very spicy. Usually it has a deep, earthy, almost tobacco like flavor. Delicious stuff.

Fresh arbol salsas definitely get my nose running. 😊 Great flavor, too! I like them better than serranos for salsa. I find the fresh ones to be much hotter than the dried ones (that I mainly use for stir fries).

Arbol always hits me harder than habanero for some reason. Arbol seems to burn my tongue where habanero gets my lips and I side of my cheeks more.
