I don’t know if my expectation was too high, but it didn’t taste as sweet as what people described it as. It tasted slightly better than a grocery store tomato. Am I missing something? Did I do a bad job growing them? 😭😭😭

Did it basically fall off the plant or did you need to use a little force to pick it? If the latter, its probably still a bit under.
I grew some black strawberry’s last year. First picking was terrible and I was annoyed. Let them sit for a month on the plant and they were awesome.

Sungold are amazing snacking tomatoes. Plus they’re just prolific producers too.

Idk if the color saturation is off in the photo – but it looks slightly underripe to me. They are best when they have been baking in the sun all day on a hot day and they are ripened to a deeper orange. When you pull them off the vine they crack a little at the stem because they are softer.
The first ones aren’t always the best, try waiting until a hot summer day when the plant is producing tons, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed!

No pro but I’ve grown them from different suppliers and got different results. First time I grew em I loved em got it from a nursery. Second time I grew from seed(I think botanical interest)and was disappointed. Bought direct from Burpee and it’s what I was looking for and have been growing past couple times.
I hate raw tomatoes and these got me to eat them off the plant. I know it’s a fruit but it taste what you think a fruit would taste like.

I grew them for the first time laat year and they were amazing. Tasted almost citrusy.

Probably underripe but I feel you. I fall for the hype on all things tomato and fruit all the time.
Grew ground cherries last year that were supposed to taste just like pineapple. No they didn’t lol

Sungold and Mr. Stripey are two that have almost always disappointed me.

What brand of soil did you use?

The first ones are always a little off. Give it a few more before you make a judgment. I’d say, get back to us after your 8th or 9th sungold.

I was never very impressed with them in my growing experience, I noticed the skin was a bit tough as well, that was my biggest gripe

Earlier tomatoes (of any sort) off a given plant will often be lackluster at best. Mealy, bland, tough skins, or even an “off” flavor…so don’t write them off just yet.
Could be that you just don’t like them, of course!
But speaking as a tomato grower who actually hates raw tomato (so no bias here as far as taste goes), SunGold is one of the few that people I give tomatoes to will actually ask for specifically….and there’s a reason it’s so dang popular.
It does poorly for me (although that seems not to be the case for most people) so I no longer grow it, but it’s the one variety that I kinda feel guilty about not growing anymore — people like it *that* much.

Sun Sugar is the sweet one, the sun gold has a decent amount of acid to balance the sweetness.
im growing sun sugar this year over my favorite sun golds. It does look unripe, should have more of a blush than a consistent orange color.

If the taste wasn’t amazing something is up. Is it under ripe? Has it been cool and wet? Cause as I’m sure people are going to tell you here, they’re among the best flavored tomatoes.

I’ve had sungolds the last couple years. The flavor varies. When it is hot in the middle of summer they are at their best. When it cools off and the tomatoes are not in full, I’ve had watery tasting tomatoes. Last year I had them in good sun and they were very good.

That in the picture isn’t ripe in my opinion, should be a little darker and more uniform. I’d wait probably 3 days

Overrated mater for sure. Prolific producer but not great taste imho

I love Sungolds. They need to be more ripe, when they start to crack open and are warm. They are like candy. Just give it time.
