Got a “flame tamer” (see pic) and it seemed to help disperse the heat but at 180 degrees my left side is 20 degrees hotter than what it’s set at and my right side is 30-40 degrees hotter. At 250 my left is still about 20 degrees hotter but my right side is 40-100 degrees hotter…. I’ve tried opening the smoke stack all the way and closing it but the temps stay at the same range.
My “flame tamer” has two openings and I have the open ends pointed to the front and back. I’m thinking maybe turning it to the left and right might help? Maybe the heat is getting out towards the front and back getting around the built in deflector plate? I would have done this already but I didn’t think about it until just now.
Any advice or similar experiences?

I watched a video a few weeks back where they experimented with the flame tamer and they achieved a better even temp spread with the openings pointed side to side. I’d try that then if you lose some temp front and back cut smaller windows in them side panels
If I am going a really long smoke that I am concerned about I usually do second rack just to get as far away from direct heat as possible.
I love the flame broiler for reverse searing, so I use it a lot
My PB does the same thing. Theres an additional deflector mod you can buy.
Do you have the end gap mod done as well?
Personally I’ve heard not so great things about pitboss. They are normally cheaper for a reason
I have the Yoder ys640S and it has a range of temperature zones inside also. I think it’s great to have a hot side and cool side as it makes adjusting the cook easier to modify along the way. And yes the deflection plate allows the heat around it which creates the temperature zones. Takes a little time to dial in, but I’d rather have the different zones than all exactly the same.
People flat out overthink this shit lol. That’s all I’m gonna say. From the goof that said I heard pitboss is this that’s why they are cheap to the claims that you must have mods…meh ok
