From an email I just fielded from Patagonia:

Responsible Choices

At Patagonia Provisions, we’re in business to save our home planet. It’s a simple statement that, in practice, becomes much more complex. It means not only sourcing ingredients according to the strictest standards, but also changing our practices when conditions change.

Conditions have changed for Atlantic mackerel. For years, we’ve harvested mackerel with a small-scale, hook-and-line fishery in the Bay of Biscay. The warming ocean, though, is changing migration patterns for these fish. Today, they’re roaming both deeper and farther north than ever before, exposing them to overharvest from industrial trawl fisheries. As a result, Atlantic mackerel populations are now experiencing a significant decline.

We’ve already identified a responsible alternative, but while we make the transition, we’ve decided to stop producing our much-loved Atlantic Mackerel. Our remaining inventory is still available on our website, but only while it lasts. We encourage you to stock up while you can.

Costs & Pricing

Because earth is our only shareholder, it’s critical that our business remains healthy to fight the environmental crisis. The rising costs of our organic ingredients, along with increasingly expensive production, are very real. In short, if we’re going to maintain our exceptionally high sourcing standards and uphold our mission, we need to raise prices on our tinned seafood. Starting May 15th, our Anchovies, Mussels and Sardines will increase by $1.00 per tin. Mackerel will go up $2.00 per tin. We will, however, offer a volume discount on 10-Packs for all tinned seafood listed here.

This was not an easy decision, and we know it won’t be easy on our customers, either. But after careful consideration, we believe it’s the only responsible choice we can make. Thanks for your understanding and continued support—we appreciate both more than we can adequately express.

New prices go into effect on 5/15/25. For the next week, if you’d like stock up on anything—especially the Mackerel while it’s still available—at existing prices, now’s the time.

Thanks again,

The Patagonia Provisions team

Thanks for sharing. Any speculation on what their responsible alternative is going to be?

  2. Any idea what the volume discount will be?

Do any of you consider Patagonia tins your go-to tins for regular grocery trips?

And yet they JUST had a huge sale for all these tins at like 20% off?

Glad I got my bulk buy in.
