I just remembered the time I tried to try mantis shrimp sushi.
It was just so insect looking that I couldn't physically keep it in my mouth.
I've never had that happen and it was actually super interesting for me.
I'd try to take a bite and I'd just gag. Threw the whole thing in my mouth and just kept gagging and had to spit it out.
It's not like it tastes or smells bad or anything like that. Just the look of it triggered something in my brain I guess lol.
I don't remember how it tasted at all. Probably not that different to regular shrimp.
Anyways, just wanted to share my experience lol.

Looks like a cockroach that you stepped on in the garage 5 months ago
“Mantis shrimp are known for having a very powerful punch, with speeds and acceleration comparable to a .22 caliber bullet.” It was probably the ghost of the mantis shrimp causing mayhem and problems one last time.
They’re delicious cooked. Would love to try these as sushi.
Never had as sushi but have eaten hundreds lightly fried with a mountain of garlic in China. Exceptional flavor.
Looking for a supplier for stuff like that. FL is very boring.
You cannot imagine how much efforts are there. Removing outher shell is really a lot of works especially without any damage in the purple membrane..
I don’t enjoy regular shrimp for this reason. The look and texture remind me of when Timon and Pumbaa are eating those bugs in The Lion King.
I will eat shrimp occasionally especially if very fresh/tender or breaded/fried, but chewy, overcooked jumbo shrimp are 🤢 for me. Overcooked lobster tail as well.
I would gag too. I’ve never been able to bring myself to try Shako or Shirako. They just look soooo repulsive. It’s funny because shrimp looks like a bug too, but I have no problem with that at all. And I absolutely love sea snails.
Very good, but the ones you find in the US are almost all frozen, and they’re tough as a result. When I was in Hong Kong, I had these as a stir fry almost every day, stabbing my fingers on their shells haha.
So good

Looks like a sushi made from ‘hog remains’ from Satisfactory 🤣

I live in Japan and you want to know what my father in law (he’s a sushi chef) told me about shako that will gross you out even more?
I forget when exactly, 80s or early 90s, there was some plane crash (I believe) in or near Tokyo bay, and, when authorities recovered the bodies, they were full of these mantis shrimp, eating away the dead bodies. Since then, Japanese people have had a kind of aversion to eating shako, some people still do though (I did and loved it!).
Again, this is according to my Japanese father in law lmao 🤣
I applaud you for giving it a try despite having a weak stomach/not used to Asian food. Really impressive
Is that the shell still on? Probably needed to be off and add some mayo or some sauce on top, just a drizzle would’ve helped out.
My colleagues feed me with mantis bugs every day while working.
Had them over in SE Asia. Tasty, cooked and don’t mind it on sushi. I bought these in the market one time and I learned that I hated peeling these mofos. These guys have some badass armor. Shame humans eat everything lol.
