I recently bought some chilli plants but the leaves look pretty miserable! They are brittle and brown even though I’m watering the plant regularly ( actually worried I was over watering so stopped for a few days and aerated the soil with a fork )

Sun burn most likely, plants from greenhouses are not hardened off.

The leaves will most likely fall off and regrow. Happened to my last year. Should be fine with proper care

Also peppers do not like lots of water so once it’s established after transfer I’d let it dry out before watering.

Could be calcium deficiency. I’m by no means an expert, but it appears similar to previous grows (mostly peppers and tomatoes) of mine which had similar peculiarities.

I’ve had luck placing eggshells around the perimeter of the stalk. Just break them up into fine little pieces; there are also concentrates to mix-in and dilute with water, but not as frugal-a-method as the eggshell technique.
