Not my first year growing stuff but these are my first tomatoes of the season in a while. Took a good 3-4 year break. I can see them out my kitchen window. For some reason the anticipation it driving me slightly nutty, taking pics and checking every few hours haha.
This is Kellogg's breakfast and don't think I've ever grown a tomato this big.

My hope is that they will ripen faster if I watch them. I’ve only been checking on mine every hour or so. I don’t want to miss the exact moment they’re ripe

    Two facts of life:
    1) Time moves slower the more you stare at the clock/tomatoes.
    2) Unless you slap something and say “that’s not going anywhere” then it will, in fact, go somewhere.

Ha. Good luck with that. But we do it all the time. Even days we look at them 2 or 3 times seeing if there is any difference. Lmao. I feel ya.

They will ripen faster with a 2% Epsom salt water. The 4th and 5th essential nutrients.

Turn them upside down, when you see a pink star, you can pick them & complete the reddening inside.

This is called blushing or breaker stage.

There is no difference between fully reddened outdoors and picking them at first blushing, since the fruit is actually separated internally from the plant, at this stage.

They may even fall off with gentle movement. Especially larger varieties.

I keep mine in a several large boxes, checking every couple of days until fully red or whatever the mature color.

The benefit is, the harvest is protected from hungry animals, pests, rotting & storm damage.

I love this post! Every gardener in the world, rookie to Master Gardener, is impatient for those first tomatoes to ripen. 😆

That’s a great tomaot, and a great LOOKING tomato.
And yes, they absolutely ripen faster if you take a picture every 4hrs 🙂 🙂 🙂

As soon as a tomato starts to blush, they can be moved inside to the counter. They take nothing more from the plant at that point, and all you’re doing is highlighting a delicious “target” for pests.
People have a romantic love affair with “vine-ripened/sun-ripened”, but sitting on a counter, or inside a paper bag to speed them up, is the best way to go.

  8. So how big are these cute tomatoes, any references?

Stare harder. That’s what I do but I’m not sure it works.

If that were true I would have tomatoes coming out of my ears😂 I am obsessively checking every plant several times a day looking for that elusive telltale blush!
