I opened up a new bag of Kamado Joe Big Block this evening, and poured a big portion in Eggwene, heard a big THUNK, and found a big squared piece of what appears to be landscaping brick. 16.4 oz of non burnable material in my 20 lb bag, I’m feeling a bit like Charlie Brown: “I got a rock”. Has anyone else had this issue with this brand? I quit using Cowboy a while ago for its poor quality and frequent rocks, but have never gotten a whole chunk of brick.

I know a guy who refers to this stuff as Big Rock.

I stopped buying this wonderful stuff because of the rocks. Great charcoal but I don’t like paying for rocks. Jealous devil has served well since

Shit pisses me off everytime. I had one explode once, sending embers all over my patio. It could have burned my house down if I wasn’t nearby. I don’t understand how it happens so often. Royal oak is bad about it. I’ve called them and complained every time I get a bag with rocks.

That’s the special gift for Big Green Eggheads.

Got 2 rocks in a bag once. Use B&B now mostly out of convenience but also the limited rock to charcoal ratio.

That’s the biggest I have seen but it’s certainly not uncommon. That is not a landscape brick, it part of the kiln in which the lump was made. They all do a good job getting all the metal out (they hide huge magnets to get all the metal fragments out) but they use huge front loaders to scoop all the lump out of these kilns. You would think that they would catch something this huge but it’s impossible to catch them all. I know that some brands know the average weight of debris that gets into every bag and they add more lump to compensate (Rockwood does this).

FOGO medium chunks and Jealous Devil XL. I’ve never looked back and never had a problem.

This is why I never buy that junk. Such a red flag when this charcoal is so over promoted
