From Fishmonger to BBQ: How to Cook Perfectly Tender Octopus at Home! 🐙🔥
This week, we’re doing something a bit different — starting off at the fishmongers. Thank You to Ron Fowler & Son Fishmongers in Bookham Surrey – 01372 452980 – to see how octopus is professionally prepped, then heading home to cook it until tender and finish it off over hot BBQ coals for that beautiful smoky char.

Octopus can seem intimidating, but it’s surprisingly simple when you know how. In this video, I’ll show you how to get it perfectly tender using a gentle simmering method, and then give it a final blast on the BBQ to bring out incredible flavour. Whether you’re serving it Galician-style or going for that fire-kissed finish, this is a brilliant way to cook octopus at home.

🔪 What’s in the video:
A behind-the-scenes look at how a fishmonger preps octopus
Simmering technique for tender, juicy octopus
BBQ grilling tips to get the perfect char
Serving suggestions and flavour pairings

🔥 BBQ Octopus Method:
1️⃣ Start with cleaned octopus (done at the fishmonger)
2️⃣ Bring a pot of water to a simmer
3️⃣ Dip each octopus in 3 times to curl the tentacles, then submerge and cook for 40 minutes
4️⃣ Once tender, remove from water
5️⃣ One can be served Galician-style (see below)
6️⃣ The other is cooled in a marinade of olive oil, lemon juice, oregano & garlic
7️⃣ Grill over hot coals for 5–6 minutes, turning regularly
8️⃣ Serve with a drizzle of olive oil, a squeeze of lemon, and chopped parsley

🇪🇸 Galician-Style Octopus (Pulpo a la Gallega):
After boiling, slice the octopus into bite-sized pieces. Sprinkle with good pimentón (Spanish smoked paprika), a pinch of sea salt, and finish with a drizzle of quality olive oil. Serve over boiled potatoes or just as it is — simple and delicious.
