In this video, I’ll show you how to make a simple and authentic vegan Nasi Goreng yourself. This recipe for Indonesian fried rice is straightforward and perfect for a quick lunch or dinner.
Nasi Goreng, a true classic and the national dish of Indonesia! Literally translated, “Nasi Goreng” simply means “fried rice.” Traditionally often a way to deliciously use up leftover rice from the day before, Nasi Goreng has become a staple of Southeast Asian cuisine.
It’s best to use day-old rice for Nasi Goreng. However, if you don’t have day-old rice, it’s also fine to chill freshly cooked rice in the refrigerator for a few hours before using it.
I’m serving this fried rice here simply with fresh cucumbers, tomatoes, and vegetarian crackers (as a substitute for prawn/shrimp crackers). But the side dishes for Nasi Goreng are very versatile and can wonderfully complement the dish. Popular options also include crispy fried tofu or tempeh, Acar (a sweet and sour Indonesian pickled vegetable), fresh herbs like cilantro (coriander) or spring onions, or an extra portion of Sambal for those who like it spicier. The side dishes are an important part of the meal and can be chosen differently each time.
