Can’t speak to what fish it is, but $238 for a single fish is past outrageous.

  2. SuperDoubleDecker

I definitely wouldn’t pay that much for something that I couldn’t identify.

  3. Alpharocket69

Did it come with a happy ending for that price?

Paying $238 for that is a genuine L.

Definitely doesn’t look like a coral trout to me. The mouth is wrong imo.

This is $30 at a good Chinese place in Seattle

That mouth shape makes me reckon it’s a Banded Morwong.

Mouth seems a little on the small side for a grouper, but I don’t know anything

  9. Yikes, as a monger in a restaurant, this is very bad practice. Looks like tilapia to me…$70aud max.

    What? When? Where? How? Why?

$153.47 USD, for those who are looking for the conversion. A good Chinese restaurant should be able to get you four or five of those with that amount of money! Just getting one fish for that price is highway robbery.

I think that you got ripped but the price but it could be as it’s definitely a reef fish but if it’s a CT it’s hard to say. But yeah it must be an expensive restaurant so you pay for that I suppose. Hopefully it tastes fantastic

That is banded morwong, not coral trout.

And $100/kg is entirely too expensive for any fish.

I can buy monkfish, sockeye or lingcod for less than that and those are objectively better fish.

No coral trout are in the grouper or cod family a few fish are called this name commonly. That’s is no grouper or cod can easily tell the mouth and pectoral fins.

  15. I’m no fish expert, but the colors are about right. it’s not as red as some 东星斑 / coral trout grouper. That kind of price is pretty normal for that kind of fish. It’s considered one of the very best fish in Cantonese cuisine which highly revolves around seafood and commands that kind of price in their restaurants. The ones I’ve cooked and eaten at restaurants loses a bit of the redness when cooked, but not to the amount in that picture .

Steamed fish in Cantonese cuisine is like eating steak in America. Prices can range from $15 to $1000. You have to really know the dish to know why it’s that price. If someone doesn’t eat steak or steamed fish and you give them a $50 version and a $500 version, it’s just any other steak or steamed fish to them. In the end it is what it is, a steak is a steak where it’s $50 or $500, but every incremental improvement in taste and quality commands a higher price.

Some people in the comments think it’s a banned morwong.

I can get a plate of ‘sea bass’ from one of the local Mexican places that looks just like that for 13 bucks

im chinese so is get it, but would rather use the money on an omakase

To be fair, the parsley really brings it all together.

  19. Yellowperil123

Nope it’s not. – The body shape is wrong and the fin is too big.

I can get this for $50 a kilo at my local coop. That’s a sad looking, cooked piece of fish and absolutely diabolical someone paid $238 for it
