First time growing tomatillos in the ground and I greatly underestimated how much room they would need. 6 plants have turned into a tomatillo forest. Do I prune, try to tie them up or let chaos reign? I can't even walk between them.

Buckle up bro. That’s about the size of 1 of my tomatillos 😂
Welcome to ground cherries – they tend to do that.
Congrats! You’ll never have to plant them again! They’re RELENTLESS self-seeders, even if you think you’ve got them all, you haven’t. I planted them once ONCE 7 years ago, and they just keep happening. ANYWHERE AND EVERYWHERE. Ground cherries too.
rip me and my future I guess because I also have six in the ground.
Oh man! My brother keeps encouraging me to grow them, but I don’t want to stick them in my raised bed for the same reason I don’t want to grow zucchini in my raised bed. Space is a precious commodity in my garden. Plus, what else can you make besides salsa verde? And I do love salsa verde.
I planted two in the garden bed (instead of planting in a separate bucket) and they have taken over. I had NO IDEA they were so bushy. They are flowering, but I don’t see any fruit yet. Is there something I should be doing to pollenate them?
Yeah they’re so hardy! I am going to try to prune mine more this year
Omg! I have one plant, not in the ground yet, and have been debating where to put it as space is limited in my beds. Maybe I’ll use a grow bag…
😋 salsa verde, pork chile verde, chicken chile verde, I add to my chili too 🤫! I freeze em whole. Puree and freeze. Roast, puree, and freeze.
What I want this year. For some reason last year they wouldn’t fruit. I pray this year they will I had to restart so I’m already late struggles.
Oh boy. I have 2 plants for the first time ever. I thought that one of them was quite large already when compared to other plants I am growing this year. I see they can get to a monstrous size. Wondering what the summer will do to them haha
As tomatillos do.
You’re not alone! The first time I grew them I could not believe how big and out of control they got!
I have 8 growing, 4ft row space and 32in plant spacing. I do a modified Florida weave. I weave the bottom 2 runs so the stems don’t snap then don’t weave and let each run be looser and looser. It gets to be 3-4ft wide at the top. Sadly, I think it’s something that has to be started at planting to work right.
Also one died so I dug up one of 100s of volunteers to replace it.
