

Okay, so I just purchased two of these Smithfield tenderloins on Sunday. They immediately went in the freezer, until part night (Wed) when I put one in the fridge to thaw for dinner tonight. It smelled totally fine when I opened the package, smelled delicious while it was cooking. There's no way it could have been cross-contaminated with soap in my kitchen because it went immediately from the package to a foil-covered pan. Well I've just plated up and taken a few bites, and it tastes like freaking soap?! Wtf? Is it spoiled, or could there be something in the "spices" in the dry rub that could make it taste like soap? Please help, I really don't want to throw away a whole tenderloin but I also reeeeeaaaally don't want to get food poisoning.

That’s because it’s pork tenderloin scented soap.
I’ve run into this with similarly processed meats. Also, some herbs and spices taste soapy to some. Cilantro for example. I love the flavor of it but to a lot of people they hate, they say it tastes like soap.
I am not a fan of these, except for the teriyaki one when I make an easy stir fry.
I have had fantastic ones in the past, and then the same seasoning version taste like garbage the next time…I am not a fan of inconsistency.

These always go SO bad so much faster than the cook by date. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was just on the verge of going bad that gave that flavor
Maybe cilantro. Maybe the dish your cooking in wasn’t rinsed properly?
I sell these and I would still not trust them. I would much rather brine and marinate my own.

Toss it and avoid those.
That ingredient list would be enough to put me off of this product. In about 5 minutes you could make a better rub and leave out the maltodextrin, natural smoke flavor, citric acid, tapioca starch, and dextrose.

Smithfield is bottom of the barrel trash, that’s why. Owned by a Chinese company, every dollar wrung out. Never buy
Smithfield.
Test it yourself.
Cilantro. Some people have a gene where cilantro tastes like soap.
Maybe one of the ‘spices’ is cilantro, which tastes like soap to a percentage of people.
Buy some cilantro test it if the cilantro tastes like soap it’s your parents fault
Go to the market and specifically the produce section. Tear a leaf of cilantro off and eat it. If it tastes like soap, you know you have the gene.
Oregano and cilantro can taste like soap to some; depends on genetics. If not, ignore this message.

Gross. Not sure what to tell you. Have you made this kind before? I’d suggest just getting plain pork tenderloin and seasoning it yourself so you know what’s in there. Looking at that label there’s 3 different types of artificial sweetener. I can’t stand that the number one ingredient is “spices”. What does that even mean?

Fwiw, I make soap and nothing about that ingredient list reads soap to me.
Either there’s some contaminant situation going on or as everyone else says, cilantro.
If you have leftovers or another package, you might ask a friend to taste it to see if they get the soap flavor.
Definitely some coriander in that spice mix!
