I'm honestly just having a little fun with the title in response to the post from a vouple weeks ago. I'm not trying to be mean spirited so I hope you all don't take it that way. I did however finally make it to Holbox so here are my thoughts.
Before I even get to the food, I don't think Holbox gets enough recognition for how well run of a machine their kitchen is. The line was out the building but my friend and I waited less than 15min. The staff is also awesome and the food comes out relatively quickly. I'm also not sure how they're getting away with some of their pricing but I'm not complaining.
FOOD RUNDOWN
Ceviche Mixto – A healthy portion of octopus, shrimp and bass which I found bright, fresh, and an awesome start to the meal.
Ceviche de Scallop – Some of the best scallops I've had in California. I only wish the dish was a tad spicier.
Kanpachi and Uni Tostada – This was honestly my excuse for eating uni without ordering the entire sea urchin. Similar experience to the ceviche Mixto.
Fried Soft Shelled Krab – Not a great picture but one of the best bites of the day. The fry batter was excellent and the crab itself was juicy and plump. The sauce that came with it was tart, acidic, spicy, and just perfect.
Octopus Taco – This may be the only item that I won't rave about. The cook on my Octopus was over but in no way inedible.
Kenpachi Collars – The collars themselves were dynamite. The rice and beans that came with it just needed more salt.
All in all I now fully understand the accolades. This is firmly in my personal best restaurants list of LA and I hope to do the tasting menu in the near future. Another example of us being spoiled food wise in this city.
