Hello everyone!

I bought a Kamado Joe Jr about 2-3 months ago, and let it sit in the house by the window until tonight, as I waited for the temperature to get a little warmer (I live in Canada). I thought today would be the day, and took it outside finally for a first burn.

As the charcoal burned for about 20-30 mins, that’s when I noticed little cracks all on the outside of the Kamado, on the lid and the body. I touched the lid, and it was really hot.

Is this normal for the Kamado to have these tiny cracks all over, or did I get a defected one? I checked the inside, and there were no cracks.

I still cooked my steak and veggies, and they were very delicious. I am sure that there is no problem with the functionality, but wanted to check with this community to see if this is normal. Thank you!

  1. It’s called “crazing” and is perfectly normal for the outside of a ceramic grill like the KJ. It’s only an issue on things like enamled cast iron pans where thermal shock can do that to the cooking surface in contact with the food. Grill on

as a Canaderian, if you cook when it’s cold, bring the temp up slowly. Don’t go 0-pizza in 10 minutes

As a precaution do not it introduce high levels of heat into a cold grill. This goes for your heat deflectors as well. You will end up damaging your deflectors and/or your grill. You can get away with using a torch in the summer but in the cold you want to bring your grill to temp slowly. Same for your deflectors make sure they’re is installed when you’re bringing the grill to temp. Do not place deflectors on hot charcoal bed.
