I have never purchased or cooked a pork shoulder in my life. I have really been craving some pulled pork sandwiches, and I found a mouth-watering recipe for slow cooker Eastern NC bbq pulled pork, but it calls for a 4-5 lb cut. I couldn’t find any at the store that small, so I figured I’d just cut this one in half, vacuum seal and freeze the other half for tacos or round two of the same recipe later. I had not considered, however, this thing has a bone (or bones?) and now I don’t know how to go about cutting it. Surely I’m not the only one that’s faced this problem— help!

Grinder with a 1mm Slitting disc should make short work of that. 🤙🏻

If your slow cooker can fit the entire thing, I’d just double the recipe, and vac seal and freeze the leftovers. It’s so nice having a seasoned and cooked protein in the freezer.

If you still want to cut it, I’d just use a big chef’s knife and cut right through the center, where that label is. If you hit any bone, carve around it. No biggie

  3. Debone the butt and put the whole thing in the slow cooker. Generally, the bone is small and “7 bone” shaped and not hard to remove. Don’t worry about the looks of the cut, you are doing to pull it anyway

A single cut in the center. Your bone should be on one side of the cut, ot doesn’t run all the way across a shoulder.
