Pistachio has been a hugely popular flavour this year largely thanks to the viral Dubai chocolate. But pistachio has a place in so many other delicious desserts.

The nutty flavour has most recently been seen in a twist on a classic Italian dessert from Aldi. The supermarket’s dessert range now features a pistachio flavoured tiramisu.

I spotted the dessert in my local Aldi this weekend and knew I had to try it.

The dessert comes in a pack of two small round tubs for £2.49.

Tiramisu is an Italian dessert made up of a sponge layer soaked in coffee and alcohol, such as Marsala wine, amaretto or a coffee-based liqueur.

Traditionally the dessert is topped with a creamy layer of whipped mascarpone and dusted with cocoa powder.

Aldi’s pistachio tiramisu is described as a “sponge biscuit soaked in a coffee sauce topped with pistachio mousse and roasted pistachio nut pieces.”

For me, the best part of a tiramisu is when the coffee and alcohol flavour comes through strongly and Aldi’s tiramisu provided exactly this taste experience.

While other shoppers have said the alcoholic flavour is too strong, I find the bitterness to be the perfect complement to the creamy and sweet topping.

I was also pleased with the layering of the dessert, with the sponge remaining separate from the mousse layer so that each could be savoured.

However, if it is mostly the pistachio flavour that is drawing you to this dessert, it’s worth noting that the nutty flavour is subtle.

It definitely doesn’t give the same impact as other pistachio based desserts like Dubai chocolate or pistachio spread.

That said, the subtle nutty flavour and chopped pistachio topping certainly didn’t harm the dessert.

The size to richness ratio was just right and so was the price point. If you enjoy the strong flavours of tiramisu over a purely sweet dessert, Aldi’s dessert won’t disappoint.

Overall, it was a very satisfying take on one of my favourite classic desserts and I wouldn’t hesitate to buy it again.
