First batch I harvested were a little more than half purple, some still green. I thought they would ripen off the vine but they didn’t. Now reluctant to trim until I see some red or full purple. Or can these be picked?

  1. Give ’em a little squeeze. Ripe tomatoes will have some give.

Squeezing them a bit, but also trial and error. If you accidentally bite into an unripe one, that’s okay. The flavor is temporary, and it looks like you’ll have so many more

Pick ’em. They will ripen just fine on the counter.

Give them a little squeee. Ripe tomatoes have a bit of give to them.

With varieties where you’re not used to the color, it’s going to take some trial and error.

A ripe tomato should be pretty soft. Try a few, pay attention to the color. Eat them right off the vine.

Eventually you’ll figure out the color that is perfectly ripe, and also what they look like when your let them go too long.

If you want them to ripen fully on the vine, wait til they start to feel slightly soft and they pop off easily when you pull gently on them. If you have to pull hard they’re not quite fully ripened, but will ripen on the counter. Or if you prefer them more firm and tart, not as sweet, pick them when they’re still firm.

For me with cherry tomatoes, if I tap it and it comes off, it’s ripe 😂 they should be incredibly easy to pull off, so easy you can shake the plant and they’ll fall into your hand. That means they’re ready to eat imo

I’ve been wondering the same as well!! I think the bottom is supposed to turn red but I’ve been waiting close to two months without any luck

When the green part turns dark red, the tomatoes are ripe
