Pro tip: Always ask for “salsa mas picante.” when you get chips and salsa.
I’ve tried so many awesome insanely hot sauces because I always ask for some spicier salsa when I go to Mexican joints. It’s always a bit different and sometimes, like tonight, it’s absolute FIRE!

Try “muy picoso”
GreenGoesZoomZoom
That is absolutely a solid pro tip. I always know a place is authentic if they can deliver a super spicy and flavorful salsa.

And a lot of places charge a small fortune for it. I asked for a hot salsa at a couple different spots and was charged $5 for a couple Tablespoons of salsa. Complete ripoff.

Just ask for tomatillo sauce, which is generally what they’ll bring you when you ask for hotter

“Salsa de fuego” or “mas caliente” do it well in my area. They bring the heat in the authentic, non chain spots
Chicken-picante
I usually ask if they have a house made hot sauce. Preferably habanero or chile de arbol.
And I always ask for my chicken to be made picante

I just ask for their hottest and that always works. No need for the Spanish.

One of my favorite burrito spots was this family run cart on a street in Lincoln Heights, Los Angeles. I have no idea if they’re still there cause this was nearly ten years ago.
I remember one night picking up one of the sauce bottles they had and the mom stopped me and was like “are you sure?” and I knew it was going to be the best sauce on the table.
Cried happy tears trying to get through that burrito.

Don’t ask for “Salsa mas caliente” as that means “hotter” for temperature, not spice.

90% of the time, it’s just coming out of one big plastic jug in the back.

What are those little dish cups made out of?

I learned this from my dad when I was a little kid. Until just now, I thought everyone else did this if they like spicy.

100%—every time 🤘 I’ve gotten the best salsas this way—and they’re most likely what the kitchen eats, too.
