Brand new Kamado Joe Jr, saw some rust form around the vent. It hasn’t been long that I had this for context, it just rained a lot the last couple of days and I don’t have a cover yet. What do you use to clean this off? WD-40? Or is that bad to use on something you cook with lol.

    What rust?

It’s a bbq mate, cook with it, it isn’t a Sunday only car

I suggest buying a grill cover.

You can try and clean it with a nylon brush. If you think it’s an issue just contact Kamado Joe support and they might replace it.

What do you mean by clean? Kitchens you keep clean grills and smokers get better w use and age

If you just cook with it it will probably get greasy on its own and be fine.

However, I left mine out in the rain a while when I first got it and the entire thing got a little rusty so like you I wanted to be cautious. My solution was to disassemble it, wipe off any loose rust, and season it in my oven with veg oil like I would a cast iron pan. That is rub it with oil and put it in a hot oven for a little bit. After that I always keep a pot on top of it to keep rain off unless I’m cooking with it.

Edit: I left the name plate on when seasoning, which darkened it a bit after this. Didn’t matter to me, just mentioning.

It’s a BBQ grill. It will get way worse looking after a year of cooking.

  6. Too clean OP! Let that bad boi get gummed up from
all that good smoke. I jest of course, I think someone suggested a wire brush, that should do the trick! Do you have a cover for your KJ? I keep mine on rain or shine. The KJ one is not the best btw, not very durable, I need to buy another one (it’s less than 2 years old)

Get a stiff nylon bristle brush for these details. You shouldn’t need cleaning agents, not even a bit of water. It is an outdoor appliance and is going to gather dust, soot, creosote, schmutz, the occasional bird and bug droppings, and rust. Don’t try too hard to keep it too clean or you will damage the surfaces.
