I got this for $60 on Marketplace and am considering getting rid of it. I could barely get my chimney in it with the lid in the bale.

I don’t mind it too much myself and have learned to live with it. I know some people just put their lid on the ground and I think that’s acceptable if you like it. My biggest complain is the bolts holding it in place – they sometimes get in the way of me trying to put the grate on top of the hot coals.

Do people light their chimneys on top of the grill grate instead of charcoal grate?

You cna always detach the holder and buy a seperate lidholder. Mine was a non-MT and I bought a holder and it’s perfectly 90⁰

I changed mine out with the one that comes on the performer series. I can’t find the part number but it’s interchangeable and holds the lid straight up and it sits deeper

Personally I would just buy a shorter chimney. I use the one I got with my pit barrel which is already shorter. Also second option? Put the lid on that fire pit until you pour your coals

Why do I have the feeling that this picture is taken with the vent arm hooked to the lid bale when if you turn it 90 degrees you can open it up another 6”?

I would rather have the older models with the hinge lid that open front to back instead of right to left and the 2 side tables. I’m used to the lid hanger where it is now but it doesn’t stop me from wondering why it’s designed this way. The other thing is putting the cooking grate back in the grill is never not annoying. The screws and nuts that hold the nail to the kettle are positioned right where one would insert the grate. Instead of an effortless maneuver I now have to be conscious of sliding it just right under those screws. Weber has been making grills longer than I’ve been alive but some of their products designs suck. It’s almost like they don’t use the grills themselves

Does this model not have the hook inside the lid as well? If it does you can just hook the lid on the side while doing the chimney. If not, you can put the chimney down on the charcoal grate. If the flame hits the lid, then maybe a shorter chimney, or just let it hit the lid. What’s it gonna do discolor it? It’s a $60 grill 🤷

I’ve alway set my chimney on the concrete.

You’re not supposed to close the lid when starting charcoal with the chimney… that’s your issue right there.

I’ve owned a Weber for 30+ years and this recent thing (the lid bale) would be much better done if the holding bolts were further down the kettle between the burn and cook grates and the lid was fitted with a hooked stop on the lid surface (to keep it from going to far down into the now lowered bale). The bale is better than the old interior mounted hook where, if you missed catching the edge of the kettle, you dropped the hot lid into the flooring and possibly damaging the lid’s enamel coating.

    Good idea…deficiently applied.
