The South African Wine Industry Professional Body (SAWIPB) has released a compelling new mini-documentary, capturing the heart of transformation and upskilling in the local wine sector.
The documentary, called This Is SAWIPB, features voices from across the wine value chain that speak to resilience, passion, and the vital importance of skills development.
Kachné Ross, people and skills development manager at South Africa Wine and executive manager of the SAWIPB, says establishing SAWIPB was never just about formalising a structure.
Rather, it has been about building a platform for people to grow, to be recognised, and to take their rightful place in the future of this industry.
“Our goal has always been to drive bigger, bolder strategies for skills development and transformation, where every individual’s contribution is valued and elevated,” she said.
SAWIPB is a dedicated organisation committed to advancing the skills and knowledge of professionals in the fields of viticulture, winemaking, wine tourism, and logistics and distribution. SAWIPB and its initiatives are supported by South Africa Wine.
Tribute to ‘human terroir’
The film highlights the power of SAWIPB’s holistic approach. The body’s work spans across primary production, winemaking, marketing, tourism, and logistics. It emphasises how these parts are interconnected and vital to producing a world-class product.
According to Ross, SAWIPB also introduces platforms such as a learner management system that is hosted by South Africa Wine, enabling employers to track learning progress and empowering workers to take control of their own development journeys.
“The documentary serves as a tribute to the ‘human terroir’ of South Africa’s wine sector. People whose passion, perseverance, and professional growth form the roots of an industry that is finally seeing the value of investing in its people as much as in its product,” she said.

An industry with skilled professionals
The national body, which represents wine grape producers, cellars, wine-related businesses, and wholesalers, is dedicated to industry growth and sustainability goals and enables SAWIPB to provide training and education services to wine industry professionals, largely through its learner management system.
Ross said that through the learner management system, initiatives like Knowledge Donation Days, and the mini-documentary, SAWIPB and its partners recognise the vital role that skilled professionals play in the success of the South African wine industry.
SAWIPB works closely with industry stakeholders to promote professionalism and sustainability within South Africa’s wine sector.
“Recently, SAWIPB achieved a significant milestone by becoming a registered non-profit company with a new governance structure,” Ross said.
This enables SAWIPB to independently certify wine industry professionals, marking a significant step towards greater autonomy and self-sufficiency.
