this is what i’ve always hated about how nutrition facts work, i find it much easier to know what the whole entire package is and then just subtract/divide the amount i eat

Likely because they do have calories which can add up and some people seem to think any “salad” is free calories

My best guess is to make it seem lower in calories than it is. Like would you rather pick up something that says 150 calories or the reality of 525 calories? Because I can make an amazing meal far more delicious and filling with better macros for 525 calories.
Side note that salads aren’t a staple in my diet except when it’s hot outside. And I always have to have protein with them regardless.

I guess I can understand the confusion because it seems silly but, it still has calories and nutrition. All calories and nutrition counts, even if it’s very little. Servings don’t mean one per meal- it’s a predetermined amount so consumers can compare and make choices. You can have 1 serving of a salad from a fast food restaurant which is very very small because it’s packed with fats and sodium or you can have almost 4 servings of a fresh salad with far less fat and higher nutritional content. If you’re hungry and looking to make a healthy choice, the latter seems far better, yes?

Ppl mistake serving for the suggested amount you should eat, which they can’t judge without knowing what else you eat.
Rather servings are chosen usually to make the calorie count and other stats look decent . 150 for a serving sounds good. But saying 525 per container may turn ppl off with the higher number. So the companies divide it by whatever they need to to make a nice sound count.

Some of it odd just weird regulatory crap. I lived in Scandinavia for a bit and everything was listed in 100 gm “portions”. It was basically standardized to make mandatory disclosures easier for the food producers. Totally a PITA for calorie control. I had to weight everything – even things like sliced bread was only given calories per 100gm. Drove me nuts.

It’s to confuse you and make it harder to compare between two different salads that are slightly different sizes.

It is to make their salad seem more calorie conscious.
One thing I often do is use less dressing and toppings to bring down the overall calories of the salad (the veggies are low cal in comparison).

You’re more likely to buy a salad that says 150 calories (*per serving*) than a salad that says 525 calories.

A lot of people get one big salad like that for their family of 4.

Its rare that I eat an entire salad in one meal, I often split them in to 2 or 4 and have them as a side dish or add some chicken on top of a portion

100g is pretty standard for a serving of veggies. That’s kind of high calorie compared to veggies like broccoli or spinach, even without the dressing.

I fear I’m the salad splitter. Not because I want to, but as an ibs girl, that much lettuce in one sitting would not go well.

And a bottle of zero coke is two servings lol

So it has lower calories labeled. Why does spray oil have a serving size of 1/4 seconds?

I can’t speak for that particular salad as idk what size it is, but I regularly make up a salad that I’ll have as a side over multiple meals, adding the stuff like avocado which I wouldn’t want to just sit there. It’s just chopping in advance.

In theory, in the US, serving sizes are set by the FDA using something called “Reference Amount Customarily Consumed” – which is determined by them in a complicated and fluid manner. As such while it is a great idea on paper, regulatory capture and corporate shenanigans means it’s mostly decided based on how hard the marketing department is aiming for a specific number.

I’m going to go off the dressing. I know it offers a calorie option for the no dressing but hear me out. I normally serving of dressing is 2 TBS so if there is 6 TBS of dressing in that bag then there should be 3 servings technically

I wish these salads that have a dressing packet would have the nutrition labeled separately for the dressing vs the salad. That’s where most of the calories come from and I rarely, if ever, use the whole dressing packet so it’s hard to judge what I’m really consuming.

I do. I have little side salads with my dinner.
