Heard about Borscht Kitchen on Lippincott and College, a Ukrainian restaurant sharing space with a sushi place. It’s in the former Auntie and Uncle spot from years ago. Wasn’t sure if they were takeout only. But they do indeed have a small number of tables. With it unseasonably cold it was perfect soup weather. So had to get the beet borscht with pork ($13). Definitely hit the spot. Then followed with a plate of varenyky filled with potato, cheddar and onions ($12). Loved how thin the wrapper was. The hearty and comforting food definitely hit the spot.

It’s interesting to compare Heavenly Pierogy around the corner on Bathurst. It also features homey Ukrainian food is inside a church basement. Their pierogy/varenyky might have an edge since you can optionally add caramelized onions and bacon. But I liked the borscht at borscht kitchen which is bit richer with the pork. Also it’s nicer to sit by the window as opposed to a basement gym. Service is lovely at both. Would love to hear from Ukrainians their takes.
