Venting because I just saw someone in r/onionhate describe onions as "a crutch for bad cooks". What? As a cook and proud onion enjoyer, I'm honestly kind of fuming right now. Very few subs (that I know of) are specifically dedicated to hating something.
Why are they circle-jerking over hating something that they don't even have to eat? I suspect a few reasons:
- Onion trauma. Daddy called them a picky eater when they were 5, and they just never really got over it.
- They think they're better than us. Onions have historically been associated with the working class, and frowned upon by the dirty bourgeoisie. *Did you know they're banned at the Met Gala?*
- They ARE hard to cook with. Even just dicing an onion properly takes hours of practice. Their flavors are volatile, multi-dimensional, and sensitive to heat.
- Raw copium. Deep down, they wish they could broaden their culinary palates. So, they resort to jealousy and spite.
Any thoughts? Pic is oniony chicken that I made a while back.

They’re all whiny assholes.. i haven’t been banned yet, but I comment on their posts, and they get pissed
I hate that you aren’t sharing your oniony chicken recipe
They probably think ketchup is spicy.
I totally get not liking onions (or any food for that matter), but their “hatred” is quite comical. Some act offended at even the possibility that a certain dish may contain onion.
Fisher Price taste buds
They have problems, internal

Anyone who doesn’t love onions is a cotton headed ninny muggins.
I didn’t think I liked onions as a teen or even early adult. But I forced myself to try them again and I loved them. Maybe a lack of experience?
Our people are so oppressed 😔
Bruh. Im meh on onions, I follow both subreddits for the relationship the two share. Y’all are one anothers lifeblood and curse. Youre foils. Both friend and enemy..someone should think of a word for that.
There has to be evil so that good can prove its purity above it.
Some people can’t tolerate others being happy.
There’s a page called r/cracksmokers, I imagine there is a hefty overlap
muted them when I was younger I didn’t like onions that is until I tried a certain diner’s onions and I feel in love with them and now I want to add them to more recipes and here’s an onion spread I made a few years ago for a steak (the recipe is simple just herbs Basil and Rosemary with bit of garlic grinded in a mortar and pestle and cook it with the onions when you take the steak out of the skillet) and do you the recipe for the oniony chicken?

Because people can’t be trusted
The texture is disturbing for them but they still like the flavor but don’t know it. Diced onion in meatloaf hits no alarms.
As George Carlin said: you know how dumb the average person is? Half of them are dumber than that. They’re literally idiots
That is a vile place devoid of any humanity or reason, the people who frequent there are simply broken and shouldn’t be given anymore thought, enjoy your onions in peace OP.
Crybabies
To leave more onions for you. Duh.
I guess I don’t understand why y’all go to subs that are dedicated to hating something you enjoy.
Because some kids who are stupidly picky eaters never grow out of it.
Even though I’m the ultimate onion lover, I can understand their sentiment because I’m a member of r/Fuckcilantro. That sub exists because you find that ingredient everywhere, and even if you ask the restaurant to omit it you *still* find cilantro in your food lots of the time. You can’t pick it out either, because you can still taste it even after it’s gone. I suspect it’s the same with them
Onionless Heathens…
I don’t care!
More for me!
Sane reason why there’s a r/childfree and r/petfree.
There always has to be a parallel.
It’s the internet – take any subject and there will be adamant fans of it, angry haters of it and those who have had sex with it.
Maybe I’m old and don’t have many fucks left to give but trying to convince haters is pointless. I’m just gonna sit here and eat bulk onions and enjoy them without a second thought of what a subreddit thinks of them.
there is also r/onionindifference for people who are indifferent to Onions.
those people probably only season their food with salt and pepper and think it’s some great culinary triumph or something and also why is it that the most vile subreddits always follow the format ‘x hate’? So many subs in that format have been banned through the years by just being full of people who are just disturbed in the head
They just maybe haven’t tasted good food with onions. Sucks to be them, more for us.
A crutch? Like they are so good that they will make anything taste good? Sounds right to me.
I think it’s fair to hate on onions if you need to do low FODMAP diet as it’s hard to eat out and totally avoid onions and garlic, but other than that legit medical reason I suspect childhood biege food eaters have grown up and are mad that cooks are putting a gosh darn vegetable in their food.
People just love to hate life. All people exist.
The one food that I’ve tried in the last 35 years that I dislike is raw onion. It’s a weird, I can smell it more than taste it thing (onion rings, blooming onions or just cooked at all are fine,) but the people in that group are NOT my people. They are like the food versions of conservatives that make it their whole personality.
What is light without dark?
Onions are amazing. Haters be haters.
Honestly it’s kind of crazy how many picky adults that walk around. I’ve met a shocking amount of people that legitimately don’t like vegetables and/or water. I also feel like some people just don’t know how to cook and are intimidated.
I pride myself on being open and willing to try anything twice. I also realize that the flavor profile of some ingredients can REALLY change depending on how they are cooked or what they are paired with. My sister’s boyfriend is a perfect example of this type of person. He is a typical chicken tender bitch. He never really grew up eating different food, and growing up his mom just made basic ass meals therefor his palate is extremely limited. He has a laundry list of foods/ingredients that he dislikes including bell pepper, onion, red meat that is not well done, all fish except salmon, tomato based sauces, any lettuce that is not iceberg, spicy foods, sushi (only eats deep fried rolls 😑), etc. And yet I made lasagna that has so many things he dislikes and he KILLED IT and thought it was so good 😒 His convictions on what foods are considered “good” are so strong and yet I’ve seen this man tell me Panda Express and Taco Bell are good but hate food at an ACTUAL CHINESE RESTAURANT…Some people just enjoy being loud AND wrong imo haha
However, then again people could easily say I’m wrong because I hate chocolate ice cream 🤷♀️
Because the average person has the palate of a toddler
