Because it’s easy to make them not low in calorie

The average person doesn’t understand nutrition I fear. They think tacos are unhealthy by nature when really they can be a relatively high volume, high protein, low calorie meal.
I’d argue the same goes for hamburgers and pasta!

Oh, that looks good… Could be the oil frequently used on corn tortillas to keep them pliable, calories in refried beans, and sometimes extra calories in the rice as well (depending on how it’s cooked). Food made by others (whether it’s fast food, restaurants, or other individuals) is also sometimes unreliable in the number of calories since you can’t 100% know the specific or amount of ingredients they use. Can definitely still be worth it now and then, though!

That looks good! How many calories is all that?
catathymia
I think it can be hard to estimate when food is from restaurants, where it’s also frequently higher in calories than what we would make at home. I do eat homemade tacos myself though and they’re great.
Long-Technology8366
Who’s staying away from tacos? 🤣 not me !
I think it maybe depends on how many someone has tho tbh they can be addicting. I usually just have 2 and I’m set now but they have to be well dressed
My main favorites are queso birra ofc! and I found out about Korean tacos and bulgogi and spicy pork are SO good. I also get two tacos from chipotle instead of a bowl now
Rileybiley
That doesn’t look that low in calories tbh. How many did you calculate it to be?
ugadawgs98
I mean….that plate isn’t what I would consider ‘low calorie’. There are over 400 calories just in the beans and rice.
Important-Trifle-411
I bet that has more calories than you think.
KeepOnRising19
I eat them weekly, but I make them myself, so I can control the ingredients.

not tacos themselves but chips and everything g added

Hard to guestimate based on the oil used with those tortillas.

It’s so hard to be sure of the calories unless youre making them yourself. Google and ChatGPT seems to land on anywhere from 120-150 each if you only do one tortilla per taco, but the trucks I’ve been to vary greatly in the amount of meat they fill them with. Also the beans probably are made with lard or sour cream and the rice is certainly cooked with oil, which adds up fast. I stick to just the tacos and count 3 as 450. The beans and rice will put this whole plate up to 800-1000, and that’s not counting the chips.

Calories are hard to control in tacos, especially ones not prepared at home. Depending on the amounts and types of fat used, the portion you pictured above could have anywhere from 800 to 1300 calories in total. Either way that is a big chunk of your daily total when trying to stay trim.
* 3 corn tortillas = 200 to 300 calories * 6 to 9oz chicken = 400 to 600 calories * 4oz of refried beans = 100 to 200 calories * 4oz of mexican rice = 100 to 200 calories
Resturaunt foods can pack a lot of extra, accidental, calories in if you aren’t careful. Especially in things that are typically healthy in their unaltered states lik3 chicken and beans.

Thats at least 1000 calories lmfao

Dude posted 1000+ calories on 1200 is plenty. Either this was your only meal of the day or somebody is lying here
sp4nky86
Bro the shells and beans alone are 400 calories between them. Add the rice and fillings and this plate is probably 700 calories.
BreyeFox
Generally 3 corn tortillas are 120 calories. There are 6 total(if they are doubled up underneath), so that’s 240, the meat, onions and cilantro should be relatively low depending on how much oil was used- could be another 100 to 250. The rice and beans are what get most people, because instead of having some they eat them all. Refried beans usually have lard and other additives in them that boost the calories. Rice has a tendency to be higher than most people think. The corn tortilla chips have a higher count than most people think. So the tacos on their own, not so bad, it’s eating the whole tray plus the chips not realizing that it’s at a minimum 600, maybe more depending on oils. Hell, I believe olive oil is like 120 per single tablespoon.
jesusthroughmary
This plate is probably pushing 1000 calories
Billyxmac
If you’re getting that from a taqueria, no chance that’s low in calories lol
RUStupidOrSarcastic
What about this is low calorie to you?
BrandonBollingers
Tortillas are NOT low in calories. They are Achilles heel. Neither are beans and rice.
rockandrye
did you eat chips? because 4 chips is one fried tortilla, lol.
CrazyBirboLady
Tacos are only low calorie if you prepare them.
Corn tortilla can be low cal if it’s thin (here in Mexico you can find tortillerías that sell really thin tortillas and I find that amazing) Meat can be prepared low cal. Al pastor pork meat could be considered low cal, since the adobo does not require fat and the pork cut renders (? Not sure if I’ve used the word correctly but it drips out of the meat) out the fat.
BUT Taquerias dip the tortilla in that oil. The salsas tend to be fried to add more flavor. Avocado salsa is not 1200 a day friendly.
So bad and misleading post, and I believe it’s a jerk move to post a plate like this in a 1200 calorie sub. When I was in calorie deficit I had to unfollow all of the food subs bc food noise is real.
PowerOfTacosCompelU
Tacos are a high calorie food.
Each flour tortilla is around 120 calories or even higher. And usually you get 3 tacos in a meal, so that’s already about 400 calories just for the tortillas. And you’re using around one cup of beef taco meat for 3 tacos which is 350 calories.
Plus sauces and cheeses.
So yeah it could very easily be 1000 calories for just 3 tacos, since its 750 calories already without sauce or cheese.

Authentic mexican food might as well be the reason I’m fat 😂😂 Shit is so bomb.

Sorry but that’s not low calorie at all. Someone lied to you.

Love to see the rampant eating disordered people yelling and screaming about how this plate has tons of calories. Like who gives a fuck? OP said the tacos are low calorie, and they are lmao.
Not everyone is out here starving themselves so yall don’t need to lose your minds over some tacos
