    That looks like the perfect amount of char to me. When I grill chicken I also char it to this exact amount.

    Clean your grill under the grates, I just had this happen, tons of crust caked onto the cast iron grates created an uneven heat distribution. I scrubbed them and let them burn for about 25 mins on each side until no more smoke, re-seasoned and they are good as new.
