A longtime pizza restaurant in Boston’s North End was named the best restaurant in Massachusetts by Foodie Haven.

The outlet compiled its list of the top restaurants in each state, and Galleria Umberto came out on top.

“This iconic pizzeria serves some of the best Sicilian-style pizza you’ll ever taste. The secret? A perfect balance of crisp crust and savory toppings,” Foodie Haven wrote. “Add an arancini to that order, and you won’t regret it.”

Galleria Umberto “is a hidden gem offering authentic and affordable Italian cuisine,” the shop’s website reads.

Umberto Deuterio founded Galleria Umberto in 1974 and passed the business down to his sons Paul and Ralph, who still run it today. Known for selling slices for $1.85, the cash-only eatery specializes in Sicilian pizza and calzones.

“The bustling atmosphere and friendly service add to the charm of this must-visit eatery,” the website continued. “With a focus on quality ingredients and traditional recipes, this unclaimed pizza spot has gained legendary status among locals and visitors alike.”

Galleria Umberto has received high praise from customers on review sites such as Yelp and Tripadvisor. In 2022, Boston Magazine proclaimed the eatery to have the best Sicilian pizza in the city. Galleria Umberto also received the prestigious America’s Classics award from the James Beard Foundation in 2018.

“The Deuterios make arancini and calzones, but the main draw is crisp-edged squares of Sicilian pizza,” the foundation wrote. “When the pizza runs out, the shop closes for the day. They also close Galleria Umberto in July to maintain the business and spend time with family.”

Galleria Umberto is located at 289 Hanover St., Boston. The pizza shop is open 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
