I woke up this morning and realized that I left 2 T-bone steaks out overnight! From about 9pm-6am. They were very frozen and about an inch and a half thick. They were wrapped in some plastic. They feel slightly cool to the touch and when I took a temp they are 61 degrees on the inside and 65 degrees on the outside. I think they smells normal, but maybe a bit sour. Color seems okay, maybe a bit brown. Do you think we can still grill them up?

Fuck it fire up the grill
Those are porterhouse steaks & unfortunately they’re bad. Don’t try it, seriously.
Don’t.
No way.
Not worth it man, live and learn.
Hell no!
My parents used to say “When in doubt, throw it out”. I don’t think that should apply in every case, but when freshness of meat, fish, or dairy are involved I lean on the side of caution. I wouldn’t eat this personally. Sorry, dude.
don’t eat it brother
consider the relative weights of regret:
“I had to throw away 2 steaks”
“I gave myself and my partner actual food poisoning”
not really a close call now is it
If you do, come see me in the local ER to get IV fluids, zofran, and possibly antibiotics
Sear the shit outta them, but at your own risk 😶🌫️
FDA guidelines are justifiably overly cautious so you have leeway some leeway, trust your nose. If they smell ok then odds are ok-ish to cook and eat, if not then they’re not.
Also keep in mind your own health circumstances, people have different tolerances to bacteria and their byproducts.
Within the Danger zone (40 – 140 degrees) for 2 plus hours? Pitch it out. Expensive mistake. I recently had to throw out a slab of pork belly. 🫤
The amount of bacteria collected in that short of time is significant. Throw them away, with color change and sour smells you have some major signs that it’s turning bad. Salmonella, e. Coli, c. Perfringes. All of these have absolutely terrible side effects if you get a bad strain. Don’t risk it over two steaks, just go to the market and get you two more rn
i’m not pissing out my ass and puking my guts out just cuz i didn’t wanna toss two steaks, but that’s just me.
Throw it away
I wouldn’t risk it personally BUT my father would not think twice about eating it 😂
Would.
i’m eating them idc 😭
I had food poisoning a few weeks ago and learned my lesson. Don’t do it my guy.
If they were wrapped and completely frozen. I personally would probably eat them. The biggest potential risk is food poisoning. With 9 hours they were probably below 34° for at least half of that time. I have rested steaks at room temp although seasoned with salt for four hours or so many times, and never had a problem.
If they smell bad don’t eat them. If they taste bad. Don’t eat them. You would likely know on the first bite if they are bad unless you heavily season them.
Nope. Nope. Nope. Not worth your health.
Yah I don’t think I would…
I would not eat this. Bacteria can fuck you up.
Lotta fools in here are advocating for food poisoning lmfao
They were frozen when you took them out? If it doesn’t smell bad you should be fine

I’ve had food poisoning twice in my life. If you’re ever in doubt, throw it out. I wouldn’t wish that nightmare on anyone
How much were they? Let’s assume $80. Imagine having horrible food poisoning and ask yourself if you’d pay $80 to make it so you never got it in the first place.
There’s a reason meat is supposed to be thawed in the refrigerator.
I thaw out my steaks in the sink overnight. Haven’t died yet.
This ain’t the steak to eat rare
The sour smell is what concerns me. Realistically, these needed just a couple hours at room temp to thaw enough to cook evenly. Then they probably stayed cold enough to substitute for the fridge for another hour or two after thawed. So now you’re really looking at 4-5 hours left at room temp and a sour smell with discoloration…
I would not eat these personally
When in doubt, throw it out.
Just pointing out based on some of the other comments that the bacteria that make you sick typically don’t have much of a smell. The ones that cause food to spoil and smell bad just make it yucky, but it’s the silent but deadly ones you need to watch out for.
absolutely not. i gave myself food poisoning once by leaving food out overnight and not wanting to waste the money… never again
Danger zone is 40°-140° for 4 hours… use caution, if it were me I wouldnt.
Also if you put them in a plastic bag and into cold water it will fully defrost in about 25 min
“take the steak out 30min before cooking to bring it to room
temperature.”
These guys have been out for 9hrs and still 61-65 degrees.
I would eat them, since they were frozen – they probably were above normal fridge temperatures for 3-4 hrs
