no one told me that my asparagus plants would look like this as asparagus grows it turns into a lush Fern Forest filled with berries but before you get any ideas these forbidden berries are not safe to eat this foliage is working hard to strengthen the crowns and root systems of your plants so if you want your asparagus to self seed and spread you should let it grow as a natural mulch this winter plus it creates a cozy habitat for your bug friends to survive the winter would you let your garden turn into an asparagus Forest

So two questions how old are your asparagus plants? And two I live in Washington state so winter is snowy and cold should I cut my three year old plants

Me thinking it was mares tail and ripping it out π
I plant asparagus for food but also because I like the feathery habitat hedge.π
The winter time the asparagus plant dies off it doesn't really create a habitat for anything after that. I mean yeah I guess as a mulch but it's a mulch then it's not an asparagus plant no more and by Winters and it should be gone

It always manages to astonish me how little people know about the native plants in this country.β€
I like to get at your forbidden berries
There's a local apple tree field near my house, at one point apparently it was an asparagus field.
The "wild" asparagus plants have been coming back for years and the locals pick them π
Asparagus is arguably one of the most tasteless vegetables out there. If it weren't for Westerners hyping it up, the plant wouldn't have a prayer.
Adult Asparagus is tied in bouquets by florists as a companion
You explain this so well, thanks βΊοΈπ©·
Love ur bful eyes. Do u need a gardener for help plz ? π
Yes let nature do what it does naturally but you can always cut it down if you want π―
Oooo! You SHOULD let it do this! It is building a larger root system. The asparagus shoots, come from the root. More roots = more asparagus. So, at the end of your season, let it grow grow grow baby!
Asparagus spreads from the roots so doesnβt need to self seed. I learned from James Prigioni at The Garden Channel that during the first few years of establishing the root system you actually want to cut the female plants when they start to seed so it sends more energy to developing the roots of the current plants. But perhaps either way is ok.
You should explain why the berries are inedible
You are hot
How do you keep it from bending over in rain
Gorgous
Just planted 16 crowns this spring. So happy to finally get them into the ground
Thank you #SaveSoil #Consciousplanet
I have them between thornless blackberries, and they are so big and tasty! They also help attract green stinkbugs to stay on their fruits instead going to my tomatoes, which is an added bonus β€
