Has this happened to anyone else?

  1. It leaks air and smoke comes out when I close the vents. It looks burned.

You need to reseal it with high temp caulk. Over time sealants crack.

Yep, I have the same thing on on an egg less than two years old. Mine’s not leaking smoke or air yet, but it certainly separating. Guess it’s time to go on a hunt for some high temp caulk. Thanks for the reminder.

Just use 100% silicone (any big box store will sell it), works great and has held up for 10 years for me.

  5. It’s difficult to tell with this ultra-closeup photo… I don’t see any of the caulking that’s normally used to seal that gap. Every BGE I’ve seen assembled by a good dealer has a liberal amount of caulk around the bottom vent to keep it sealed. Whoever assembled this one missed that crucial step.

I would call the dealer to ask for the caulking they failed to use. It won’t take long to fix. Make sure to use alcohol to clean around the area (and the vent) so the caulk is applied correctly.

If you don’t have time to deal with this before your brisket smoke tomorrow, you should be okay.

Same for me. After only about a year. I used it for several months but finally had a week I was out of town for work and decided to fix before I left to let the high temp rtv set. Took everything off and cleaned up the residue then taped off the vent and resealed. Working great again!
