Just a few tins from here in the UK. Have any of you tried any of these? If so, what are your thoughts?
The two Specially Selected ones are from Aldi…. Which I was surprised at when I first had a tin of those because they are quite pleasant and decently sized sardines. Well worth checking out if you're in the UK. I know Aldi is a worldwide supermarket these days but I have no idea about what they sell in the North American stores or in the Original European ones. Maybe some of you who have an Aldi where you live can shed some light on what they sell in your country?
Quick question on the cods roe as well… aside from straight out of the tin what are some ways you enjoy cods roe?

I think the Aldi in tomato sauce are ok for the price, I was expecting more. I disliked the ones in water a bit more because probably I don’t appreciate sardines in water very much. Definitely felt lighter but fischier than the others.
The Parmentier are very good and tasty, too much salt perhaps but overall a product with great quality/ price ratio. They come also in oil with Provence herbs which are also good. I prefer the former though.
John West is a very hit or miss brand for me: the standard sardines in sunflower oil are perhaps the worst sardines I have ever tried. Now, I never tried the ones in tomato sauce but the base product, silds I sunflower oil, instead, are very tasty, small and firm. I buy them whenever I find them.
I recently bought the same cod roe and it’s in my pantry waiting to be devoured! Let me know how it is if you try before me!
I have some of the Parmentier in olive and pimenton from Sainsbury’s and they are amazing. Chunks of tangy olive with the sardines.
Some of the best tins I’ve had were from the uk. I’ve yet to discover how french and portuguese tins compare.
I usually eat the cods roe on toast – if I want it hot I grill it with some butter or oil on top just to heat it through.
(If I ever see fresh soft roes, I toss them in some flour and fry them. That’s not so good with the canned ones because they’re already cooked).
will need to check these out; i liked some of the tins i got from waitrose but there’s an imported wine shop near me that has really pricey tins that i’ve become addicted to
Love John West fish – not a fan of their design (I know, aesthetics don’t make a difference but it matters to me!)
