Elgin town centre is about to get a taste of the Mediterranean with the upcoming opening of Greek Gyros, a new takeaway and restaurant on South Street.

Far from being just another kebab shop, this new venture is the passion project of Florian Koci and Vanesa Metaj, who have invested their life savings to bring authentic Greek cuisine to Scotland.

Vanesa said: “When we first moved to Scotland we really missed the food from our homeland. So we’ve decided that by doing this we can enjoy it here too. Cooking good food is our passion – and eating it is too.”

The couple, both with backgrounds in the restaurant trade, are brimming with excitement. Greek Gyros will be located in the former sweet shop premises on South Street and will offer both dine-in and takeaway options, with several tables available for customers.

The menu is set to feature a range of Greek classics, including:

Moussaka: Minced lamb layered with aubergines and potatoes.

Souvlaki: Grilled skewers of meat and sometimes vegetables.

Gemista: A traditional dish of vegetables stuffed with rice, herbs, and vegetables, baked in a rich tomato sauce.

Vanesa, whose mum will also be contributing to the effort, believes there’s a definite gap in the market for their offering. She emphasizes their commitment to quality, stating, “we’ll be using the highest quality ingredients.”

With strong community support already building, the couple “can’t wait” to open their doors and share their passion for Greek food with Elgin.
