So I got a pellet grill free on facebook. Guy said it keeps popping his breaker, it needs a new controller and it would be good to go. I decided to grab the grill, bought a new controller, installed it and it's still popping the gfi outlet. The pellet grill is a grilla silverbac. Has anyone experienced this? And if not and you're just knowledgeable about this type of stuff how would I go about troubleshooting and finding where the issue or short is.

You’ve got a short somewhere in the wiring. It could be a few things, but outlets don’t just pop for no reason. It’s to protect themselves. Start inspecting every single wire in there and find the short.

May have a slight bleed on your ground from the board or the element. Had it happen on an older electric smoker. It wasn’t enough to cause issues except with GFCI outlets.

Fuck, nice score. Good luck getting that issue resolved because that is a nice damn grill. Still love my member’s mark 36″, but those grilla grills are sexy.

I have a Silverbac. 99 percent it’s the igniter. Replace it. I’ve had mine for years and the two times it popped the outlet replacing the igniter made it all better

Grilla Grills customer service is also very helpful.

My guess is the heating element is shorted

  7. Is it popping the gfci itself, or the breaker feeding it?

Very unlikely to be the controller. Most likely to be the auger motor or the igniter.

If it turns out to not be the grill then it may be the breaker. They installed a new type of breaker in my house when it was built a few years ago. Unlike a GFCI that trips when it is shorted these ones will trip when there’s an arc detected. Well my gas oven would start just fine, run for a while, turn off the flame when it was hot enough, and then when it cooled and needed to kick back on it would trip the breaker restarting itself. Very odd problem. What’s even strangers that it didn’t seem to happen before but only started happening after my solar panel panels were installed. Fortunately it happened while we were in the install process and the installer from Tesla Energy swapped out the breaker with one that doesn’t have that feature. Never had a problem again.

You already have some good advice here (especially regarding replacing the hot rod and/or breaker), so I’m going to make an unrelated comment:

Might want to check that grease spout, asking for trouble with that wire collection bucket 😂

Are you connected to an extension cord? If so, up the gauge a bit and see if that does it. Sounds too simple to work but I had a green mountain grill that was constantly popping the breaker and this did the trick for me.

Call customer service. They might send you the part for free.

Nothing to do with the electric for my post, but make sure you get a liner in that grease bucket or it’s going to be gnarly on your patio!

  13. I wonder if there are swollen pellets in the auger that is causing the motor to draw more amps that necessary? Just spitballing here.
