  1. What is a pea crab? It lives inside the oyster? Never Heard of that.

I’ve yet to see that in all the oysters we’ve eaten – kind of fun!

I read that George Washington was a fan of pea crabs.

Blue points have tons of pea crabs. I’ll get a dozen blue points and at least 2 have them.

It really blows my mind in America we don’t like to clean oysters… this idea of keep oyster liquor is gross.
Go to any of the Asian countries they rinse it clean like 2 to 3x.

I only recently learned they are just fine, and even considered a plus.

Would like to add that they can be in mussels too? Please tell me if the ones in mussels are not the same?

Once upon a time decades ago some friends and I headed out to a mussel shoal of some description in New England, picked our own, brought them home and steam cooked them in the traditional way. Almost every single one had a pea crab. At the time I had no idea if that was a good sign or bad, the mussels appeared to be perfectly healthy so I discarded the crabs but ate the mussels.
