All cheese lovers will agree that there’s nothing quite as satisfying as the rich taste of their preferred type, whether it’s paired with crackers on a cheese board, sandwiched between bread, or melted into a warm fondue.
But when it comes to slicing it up for you to enjoy, either alone or with others, things can get a bit tricky as some cheeses tend to stick to the knife or fall apart easily while slicing. Thankfully, some cheese connoisseur have found a simple yet effective method to overcome this problem. To perfectly slice up cheese, either for yourself or for a cheese board, French native Eva, who now lives in Australia, has shared insight on how to neatly cut various types of cheese.
“We cut the cheese according to their shape,” she explained in a TikTok video.

Jumping in to a tutorial for how to cut different types of cheese, she starts off with one common favourite – the camembert. She explained: “When you have a round cheese like Camembert, we cut parts as we cut parts of pizza.”
Eva advises using a similar method when dealing with wedge-shaped cheeses, such as blue cheese. The recommendation is to slice from the narrow middle towards the wider edge, so that each piece resembles a tiny triangle.
“And we continue in this way to the other side,” Eva explained as she continued slicing the blue cheese.
Turning to a wedge of Brie and similarly shaped options, she suggested: “For the Brie, the pointy cheeses we can cut ‘morsels’, like this,”
She went on to show what she meant by slicing a thin a slender slice off the long side of the triangular hunk. For those serving multiple guests, Eva notes it’s also possible to slice the brie vertically into smaller, thin triangles, finishing off the last piece with rectangular cuts.
“If the cheese is ever placed on a cheese platter, never cut off the tip for yourself,” she advised her audience, highlighting that in French etiquette, this is considered a significant faux pas.
For slicing harder cheeses, Eva showed that the optimal method is to first cut horizontally into rectangular slices until halfway through. Then, proceed to slice the remaining portion vertically into equally sized rectangles.
“Here you go, I hope now you know how to cut cheeses, especially if you’re invited to a French place,” Eva said at the end of her video,.
Her video quickly gained comments of appreciation from viewers in the comments section, who were grateful for her straightforward advice.
“Love this, merci beaucoup. I wish my guests would see this too, sometimes they make a right mess,” one viewer said.
Another admirer said: “Gosh I so love French cheeses, it’s unbelievable.”
