We just moved to a new house in Tennessee that had a BGE. It didn't look like this when we looked at the house a few months ago. It's my first BGE. How do I clean it as best possible? Thanks!

  1. Run it hot for 20-30 minutes. Then just brush everything down once it cools.

    Burn that sumbitch.

Clean the daisy wheel like cast iron. Google is your friend.

Great free house warming gift. Any cracks anywhere? What is it sitting in? Nest? Table?

How many “how do I clean a ceramic vessel that can heat up to 1000°f” threads are we averaging a day here? 🤔

  4. Burn baby burn. Put in some cheap charcoal. But the vent down all the way open and the top as well. Light it up. And let it burn baby. As hot and as long as the charcoal burns. Let it cool of and brush everything on the inside. Scoop out all the remains and voila its clean as new

Take out all that old lump and get as much of,if not all, the old ash out. Remove the dome thermometer. Add new lump and light it up. Leave the bottom grate fully open. I’d leave the daisy wheel inside as well (or if you put it on top leave it wide open too). Leave the lid open until you get a good fire going and then close the lid. Let that burn off everything. If you want a full clean let that burn until the temp starts coming down. If you ever want to check progress, make sure you burp the lid or you’ll risk having a backdraft/flashback and losing the hair on your arms or more. If you just want to kill the mold, then 20-30 minutes of burn time is enough. If you do the full burn, the insides will be back to its original clean ceramic white.
Either way, I’d recommend replacing the gasket afterwards.

After that you’ll have a just like new BGE.

If you leave the daisy wheel cap inside during the burn, you’ll have to re-season it afterwards. Just apply a light coat of oil (canola, peanut, etc.) and then let that bake in an oven at 400 (or use your BGE to do this outside). Let it cool down and apply another light coat of oil. That’ll get it looking brand new again as well.

    Edit: fixed autocorrect typo.

You didn’t choose the new house in Tennessee. The Egg chose you.

Don’t forget to oil that daisy wheel afterwords. I forgot and it turned to rust immediately.

  8. That’s nothing compared to a couple times when entire civilizations of life evolved in my BGE.

It happens. Fire it up and burn a load of charcoal.

Clean out all the old charcoal and ash. Put fresh charcoal in. Light her up. Once the fire stabilizes, open the top and bottom up fully. Let the temps get up to 500 for a few minutes. EVERYTHING you see that is living and could be potentially harmful will be incinerated. Then take your grill brush and brush off the grate. After that then close top and bottom air vents including the lid. All good from thereon out.

Remove the thermometer or you’ll be buying a new one …
