I am finally getting to restoring my egg back to new condition. Replacing screen, gaskets, hinge and handle, new style vent cap. Note that I did maintain it better the first couple years but a divorce and 4 moves later I am getting back to taking care of it. Have a lot of scrubbing and the good burn off.

Embarrassing but her are the pics of day one (only working about an hour since its way to hot out). Any recommendations are welcome. I want to get this thing clean.

  1. First thing I’d do is put it all back together and run a super hot burn on it for like an hour or more.

    Dude, that ain’t embarrassing.

That’s a valued tool that is well used.

That is a lot of effort. Clean burn would have taken care of it.

I must be 15 years past due on cleaning my eggs.

Why do you want to “clean” all that flavor off?

Restaurant guy here: light steel wool and a big jug of warm-dish-soap water. Vinegar is your friend, too! Get right in there, get a couple different scrub tools from dollar store even. Try to be methodical, dividing it up into segments, not random.

Why bother? There’s nothing recommended by bge that states you need to do a deep clean. The thing is seasoned, it’s like stripping a cast iron skillet. Maybe a good scrub on the grates but that’s about it. Doing high temp burns, all your doing is ruining your gaskets and possibly cracking the fire box inside, not worth it or recommend by BGE.
