From what I understand, gopchang rock seaweed, so named because of its appearance resembling gopchang, is supposed to be a premium product that's only available for a short time every year. Has anyone tried the one available at Costco? What did you think?

I, being a pedestrian, can’t really tell the difference between the fancy seasonal seaweed and the regular stuff. I can’t comment on the costco stuff, but I’ve had other big bulk sets of supposedly fancy brabds. It all tastes pretty samey. There are some subtle differences, im sure, but i can’t tell. Also, i usually can’t get through it fast enough, and i wind up using it as part of my kimchi jjigae broth.

It’s all good on rice, tho!

Omg which costco has that seaweed? I need one! No I beed 10 boxes! It’s a little bit thicker than other seaweed and has a little rough texture, I think. That’s why I like it so much.

  3. This brand of gopchang seaweed has rosemary oil which adds a really unique flavor. Very delicious although more brittle than standard seaweed. Worth a try imo.

  4. I bought it. It was delicious. I am eagerly waiting for my Costco to stock more so i can buy 4 boxes.

I said this already in the Costco subreddit but THE EAST COAST NEVER GETS THE GOOD STUFF. 😭 I’m so jealous.

It’s incredibly good!! I’ve been buying Costco’s other Winter Harvest seaweed obsessively for well over a decade (I even used to get it shipped via Amazon/eBay for 2x markup when I was living in a non-Costco area), but this has officially supplanted it in my household.

Pros: excellent flavor and crispness. Smaller packages (about 1/5 of the size of a winter harvest carton) means better snacking portions for my needs. I prefer the Gopchang’s flavor bc to me it tastes more *delicately oceanic* than other seaweeds, but my non-asian spouse (who did not grow up snacking on seaweed) likes it bc “it’s the only seaweed snack I’ve ever had that doesn’t taste fishy.” 🤷🏻‍♀️ Anyway, we both agree it tastes fantastic! (The rosemary oil addition is VERY subtle and I didn’t even clock it as rosemary until reading this thread, despite growing and cooking with rosemary often.)

Cons: downside of that smaller size, a lot more plastic packaging. Packs within packs. We pay for a specialized community plastic recycling program (Ridwell) that accepts foil packaging so ig I don’t feel too personally bad about it, but FYI. Also, sodium is slightly higher than Winter Harvest— surprisingly, since to me Gopchang actually tastes less “salty,” just more flavorful. About 16 mg per 1 gram seaweed (vs 12 mg/g for winter harvest).

  8. Oh god it’s back?!?! I hadn’t seen this in any of my locations for more than a year. Very good, I prefer it to the organic seasoned seaweed in the green packaging that they usually carry.

One thing of note: some packets have a inconsistent texture, almost like they took powered seaweed and molded it into sheets. The flavor is still good but I had people tell me they just didn’t like the texture.

  9. They’re selling this shit in American costco now??? Holy cow what a time to be alive. My mom swore by this stuff, she would have been so happy to see it at costco. What area are you in?

Gopchang brand seaweed is the best! My mom literally brings 10-20 cans of them from Korea (yes, they come in actual cans) every time she comes to visit me in California. So jealous you can buy them at Costco!
