A decade ago I went to school for baking and pastry arts, because I grew up baking, and loved it so much!

I’m glad I went to school for it, I learned so many incredible things, I got to go to Italy because of it (and a cruise with a friend I made in the class, but that’s besides the point lol!), and really did have an amazing time while in school

However, I also lost my passion for baking, because I was sick of baking the same thing over and over again, standing for hours on end kill me, and with me being disabled, I just can’t do it! Plus, I didn’t learn a lot about decorating (which was the main reason I went to school), and lost my passion to bake

So, please enjoy so throwbacks to when I was in school for baking

I’m kind of the same way but there’s also no work in my area for it

Did the same, but the early hours screwed with me so much I collapsed, so I quit. Apparently it was relatively common.

I liked my experience, though. It was a community college, so I didn’t spend a ton of money on it. I learned a lot of things about an art form I love. No regrets.

  3. Same here! I enjoyed baking, so after highschool my mom pressured me into going to culinary school. I did 3 years, and worked at various bakeries and restaurants during that time. Graduated and got a good baking position but the place I worked for really treated me like shit and the time and pieces of myself was not worth the minimum wage pay. Now I’m studying design (really enjoying it) and only bake for family lol.

  4. They all look amazing! My favorite is the chocolate dome with the rose on top….

Maybe you could sell cakes etc out of your own kitchen? Ive had a couple acquaintances who do this. One even has a formal business with her houses registered on Google maps. The other is all word of mouth side-gig-y. But people pull up and they bring it outside in nice looking plastic cake boxes.
Start baking for parties and if someone raves about it tell them you sell them too 🙂

I became very humbled very quick looking at these. Amazing work!

  7. I did the same, 12 years ago, I worked in the industry until covid. Early morning hours and constantly being yelled, no thank you. I don’t even bake anymore other than banana bread, if that. I really wish I had just done cakes and cookies on the side and got a degree in business or something. I did go back to school and finished my bachelor’s in finance and now I’m working from home in accounting. There is some overlap of inventory and such in my accounting world so I guess that counts some.

Just tossing this out there, you don’t need to stand to do the dishes, to brush your teeth, to bake or to cook etc. do your hobbies, make it comfy. I don’t enjoy standing for longer periods of time so I do my baking in the livingroom in a space I clean right before I start so it’s as clean as possible. I put on a show and I start mixing everything together and measuring and such and once it’s ready for the oven I put it in and go sit down again.

Some would call it lazy. But if you’re being productive then it’s not lazy.

Try applying to food manufacturers that bake. Don’t look for openings, just send a resume. Cake, pie, dessert, bread companies. They are always looking for R&D bakers. It pays well and can be hella fun.

The opera cake looks divine! You’ve done a fabulous job 😋

  12. I went through culinary school (CIA) did my time in kitchens and left.

I still cook – but I don’t think taking courses or training necessarily has to make money for the skills to be enjoyed. I like cooking, it’s a cool skill to have.

Do I spy a little slice of heaven aka opera cake in that first photo? What a beauty! My partner’s favorite dessert. Thank you for sharing.

  16. Never turn your hobby into a career. I know it sounds wrong but you will end up hating your hobby.
