Aren’t you tired of paying €10 per kilo for tomatoes that taste like water? Aren’t you tired of eating bagged salad full of pesticides? Aren’t you tired of seeing strawberries in supermarket shelves in the middle of December? Well, me too. My name is Cedric. I’m 42 and I want to take back some control, at least a little, over the vegetables I eat. I live in Paris and I’m lucky to have a fairly large balcony, so I want to make the most of it. I’m just a beginner gardener. I’ve planted a few vegetables and tried different things, but honestly, I still have a lot to learn. This YouTube channel is kind of my gardening journal. I hope it will motivate you to think more about the quality of the food you eat and about your health, too. We live in a world where junk food is everywhere and we are constantly bombarded with ads pushing ultra process processed food full of sugar, fat, and additives. We’ve forgotten what real food tastes like, the value of simple cooking, and the importance of vitamins and minerals. I’m not a pro at all. I’ve had this balcony for 3 years and I’ve always managed to grow something on it, even when I didn’t try that hard. But now I want to do things in a more organized and thoughtful way. Maybe you don’t live in the countryside or have space to grow things in the ground, but there are still ways to take control of your food even in the city, even without a balcony. I will talk more about that in future videos. Through this channel, I want to share my wins and my fails. I want to learn more about gardening and share my discoveries with you. Hopefully, I will inspire some of you to do the same. And I also hope to learn from your comments so we can grow together. I will be doing my video in English, not because I’m fluent, but because I want to challenge myself and improve in an language that’s essential today. I don’t really get to practice it in my daily life, so this is my chance. All right, enough talking. You saw it in the thumbnail. I’m going to show you around my balcony. It’s about 1.5 m wide and 5.5 m long. So, there is enough space to grow different plants and vegetables. It’s facing north in summer. It gets sun for about four to 5 hours in the morning. So, it’s in the shade until around 700 p.m. As you can see, I like to experiment. Over here, I planted some potatoes that had sprouted because I forgot about them. I also planted mint, dill, and sage seeds. I have this grape vine I bought three years ago at the mart fond. I think I need to add compost and change the soil. It’s growing smaller leaves and produce fewer grapes than last year. On this side, I have some raspberry plants. The leaves are pretty dry, but they still gave me a few fruits. I planted them last year. I also have some strawberry plants a friend gave to me two years ago. They are doing well since they are not in full sun. When the birds don’t seal them, I managed to get a few strawberries. For flowers, here I have either an onion or charot blooming and some dill as well. There are also potatoes in the back. And here I have tiny tomato plant that grew from a seed. Because I had cherry tomatoes last year and I guess one seed fell into the grape vine pot. I was surprised to see it sprouting recently. As you can see, my planters aren’t always there because they often just wooden furniture I found in the street and and brought home. What I love about this balcony is that I often get a little insect or birds coming to visit and I would love to see even more. I think it’s really important, especially in the city. So, that’s it for the tour. It’s the beginning of July, so I’m starting to prepare for autumn vegetables. I’ve already ordered some seeds. I also found some flower pots for my next crops. I’m lucky there is a florist near my place who often throws away used pots or damaged plants so I make good use of them. If you like this project, feel free to subscribe. In the next video, I will show you how I plan to reorganize my balcony and share more discoveries about urban gardening. See you soon.
