If you’re going for an authentic vintage look, you should know that people didn’t usually have things like long icing spatulas in the house in the pre-Pinterest era. You would use a butter knife to swirl the icing in artistic patterns because you really couldn’t cover a cake in a flat layer of icing. Only ***very*** enthusiastic home decorators or people running a business would have owned such specialized decorating tools.
