Ask me anything, I think it came out delicious also not as challenging as I thought it would be.

Putting a little water on the knife before slicing the sushi makes it glide more through the roll. Don’t be afraid to shape the roll again after you cut it. Learn the best part for you to put the fish on the sushi roll and the amount so it’s in the middle.thicker avocado slices would work better than long skinny ones. Have fun man it’s a blast learning and getting better

I must say, it looks *vastly* better than my first attempt, where I was charged with assault and battery against salmon & rice😆.
A lot of it looks fine, especially the maki. The nigiri needs more work, as the amount of seasoned rice and the cut of fish for it is a bit more complex.
Well done. Thanks for having the moxy to make and post your efforts.

  3. I’m gonna be honest, that doesn’t look good. But my attempts at home have fucking sucked as well, and I’m very drunk right now on 4th of July and I would GLADLY come over and eat that all up with you

That’s a pretty solid first roll!!!

Focus on your rice. Like that should be all you work on, the rolls will happen for you as you noted it isn’t hard at all. My kids can make rolls. It’s all about the rice. Do you have a fuzzy logic rice cooker? If you think you will make sushi alot (1-2x a month I think is a lot, I make it more often than that but I love sushi) the I recommend getting a hangiri as well. If you are going to make it like once or twice a year then ignore all that. Either way, have fun with it and don’t be shy to try different veggies and homemade sauces and whatnot. Also maybe a Sharper knife and for sure water and more thoughtful shaping as already noted by another commenter.

Looks better than my first attempt of rolling. I was working at a sushi restaurant making rice and watching chefs make sushi and roll for 1.5 months at that time! So yeah that is some good roll for the first timer!

  6. Do you have a bamboo rolling mat? Those can help maintain the shape and let you do tighter rolls when the rice is outside. Throw some plastic wrap on it to keep the rice from sticking to the mat.

This looks really good for a first time! Ignore the haters. No shit it will look a little sloppy. So do many pro rolls…

Do you just use salmon from a regular grocery store, or does it have to be something specific?

When doing rice make sure you get just barely enough to cover the rice paper but you can still see the rice paper through the rice 👌🏽
