ESCANABA, Mich. (WLUC) – Before you head out into the wilderness for a few days, you can take the Department of Natural Resources’ outdoor cooking class.

The DNR Pocket Park in Escanaba is hosting a free class every Saturday for the next four weeks.

You can learn different styles of outdoor cooking from what you might need for backpacking to using jet boils, camp stoves or a Dutch oven cast iron. The class is helpful for people of all ages.

Nature guide and Pocket Park Interpreter Melissa Erny says cooking outside is an important skill to have beyond just survival.

“To be able to enjoy nature in different ways,” Erny said. “Be able to expand your horizons. Be able to enjoy entertainment in a new form. There are so many different benefits you can have from spending more time in nature and why not enjoy cooking?”

You do not need to sign up for this class. Erny says you can show up to the Pocket Park at 1 p.m. on any of the following Saturdays:
